My mom grew up during the war in Germany.
She spent a lot of time in air raid bunkers.
The entire family lived in an industrial town,
and during her teenage years it was pretty
consistent and constant bombing of Kasold which
was, I think, where the Krupps locomotive works
were located. It was pretty well levelled during
the war.
Mom and the entire family grew up
Catholic. They didn't spend a lot of time in
church during the war years. My mother always
felt that she had a belief in God and in angels.
She always felt that the angels were looking
over our family at the time. She had a couple of
brothers that were in the war, fighting. One was
a submariner, and another was an infantryman.
Of all the family and uncles in the war, there were
some injuries. But the family was held safe.
They came out alive and made it through that period.
My mother was a strong woman, a very strong woman,
and obviously that was during her formative years,
I think that must have strengthened her and
strengthened her faith in God and in angels in
keeping family safe during that time. That's what
I remember most about my Mom.
