FAITH OF OUR FATHERS

Marlin Stanberry's Story

PACE Class - 18 June 17

We were raised Baptist, and my father was a pillar in the Baptist church, a deacon in the church, and one who did above and beyond to serve that church.

Before he was married to my mother, he had a previous marriage, and in that marriage he had two children. He and his wife lost one of those children as an infant, and then second, his wife died. And then finally the other daughter died when she was 6 years of age.

In the process of getting ready to move here, we went through a lot of clippings, pictures and one thing and another, and we found articles about that side of my dad's life. Because this was a side of his life that we really didn't talk about. Other than through the clippings and just a tiny bit that I heard, I wouldn't know that story.

But when I looked at those clippings and I thought of this man that lost two children and a wife at a very young age, he had a choice to make. He could have easily turned his back on the church, in my opinion he could have, because life dealt him a very, very bitter blow.

But yet he married my mother and then went on, as I say, was a great man of faith, and I really look forward to the day when I can hear more about that story, and to tell him about how much I appreciate his faith and the foundation of faith that he gave to me.
